Since 26 September 2024, Nepal has been devastated by catastrophic flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains. In Kathmandu alone, rainfall has broken records, being the highest in 54 years. The situation across the country has become dire, with the floods causing extensive damage to homes, schools, and critical infrastructure. 236 lives have been lost and 165 people are injured. Emergency teams have rescued over 17,000 people from danger zones and vulnerable communities.
The impact on communities and our response
In Rautahat West Area Programme, where many World Vision sponsored children live, the damage has been severe. As of 4 October, approximately 2,000 households in Rautahat are displaced. 598 houses are fully damaged while 1,132 houses sustained partial damage. Floods have also damaged agricultural fields, raising concerns about food security in the coming months.

Emergency shelters
Hygiene kits
Safe drinking water access
In addition, World Vision will also focus on long-term recovery, which includes restoring livelihoods, repairing water and sanitation systems, replacing educational materials, and rebuilding school infrastructure to help affected communities restore their lives.
