Emergency Appeal: Devastating Earthquake Hits Myanmar
A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck central Myanmar on Friday, 28 March 28 2025, killing more than 3,600 people with more than 5,000 injured and 160 still missing.
The powerful quake struck at 12:50 PM local time at a shallow depth of just 10km, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock just 12 minutes later. The disaster has been felt across the region, with tremors reported in Thailand, Laos, Bangladesh, China, and Vietnam.
The earthquake has caused catastrophic damage across Myanmar:
Children are especially vulnerable in this crisis. Many are frightened and traumatised, having lost their homes and safe spaces. Schools lie in ruins, leaving children without educational facilities and the stability they provide.
World Vision's Response
World Vision is on the ground, mobilising resources to meet the urgent needs of 500,000 affected people by providing immediate relief.
"We are racing to find out how much devastation this quake has caused but we know from talking to staff, from what we see on the news, and the fact that Myanmar has officially asked for international aid, that this has likely had a devastating impact," says Dr. Kyi Minn, World Vision Myanmar International National Director.
"I urge supporters to dig deep and please support children and their families who have survived this disaster. They are going to need emergency aid to get them through the days and months ahead."
