7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Philippines on First Day of School
A child's first day of school should bring hope. Instead, millions of children faced fear.
On 8 June 2026, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck South Mindanao in the Philippines — triggering tsunami warnings, power cuts, and forcing children to flee their classrooms. As of 10 June, over 40 lives have been lost, close to 500 injured, and more than 77,000 displaced.
Amid ongoing aftershocks and monsoon rains, families are without safe shelter and basic essentials. Children — already shaken — are now facing trauma, fear, and uncertainty.
