Hope Endures

Vision News , June 2022      3 min read

The war in Ukraine has captured the world’s attention, and that’s as it should be. The devastation is tragic, as people are forced to flee their homes seeking safety, protection and assistance. It’s been encouraging to see governments and ordinary citizens taking a real interest in Ukrainian refugees and giving generously to help them. However, there are many other refugees around the world in circumstances that are just as desperate.

According to June 2021 data from UNHCR – The UN’s Refugee Agency:

This is why World Refugee Day is observed globally on 20 June to commemorate the obstacles refugees face each year while celebrating their courage and strength. It is also important that we remember them every day, and spread hope, awareness and support for refugees.

Here’s the story of 13-year-old Jasmine and how she is staying hopeful and bright despite everything she’s been through as a refugee.

“My family and I used to live in Damascus. We had a beautiful house, and were delighted in our life until the war started in Syria. We feared the loud noises from bombs and jet fighters, and we couldn’t play outside like we used to. My family decided to leave our beloved home and come to Jordan. It was a difficult journey as we arrived in the middle of the night and the luggage that we managed to bring with us was exhausting to carry.

My family arrived in Azraq camp seven years ago. We found a new place and a new life to live. Now, I have made new friends and can play again. We feel safe here; we can continue our education and enjoy the sports centres provided.”

“When I grow up, I want to become a doctor to help my family and treat people in need. I also hope to go back to my country when the war ends, and that my family will stay safe and together." says Jasmine
